| Self defence should be renamed "self
preservation". For it is the physical and mental training given
to avoid attack or to retreat from an attack as quickly and safely
as possible.
Self-defence will not give the same level of physical skills as
a competent martial artist to disarm or incapacitate an attacker.
However, a shorter training programme may open avenues of thought
which allow a potential victim to have the fore thought to avoid
a potentially dangerous or lethal situation. The physical presence
and mental confidence to assert oneself is enough to deter a potential
attacker. Finally and as a last resort enough self-defence skills
to escape a physical attack with the minimum of injury.
The physical part of the training will involve several different
but equally important stages:
Counters
& escapes to various attack and locks e.g. escapes from strangles,
hair grabs, ground attacks etc.
Learning
to strike specific areas of the body. This will allow the student
to inflict as much pain as possible with the least amount of force
delivered. Designed particularly with adolescent girls and ladies
in mind.
Learning
to land correctly to protect you from injury from being pushed or
thrown against a hard end surface.
To
learn when it is the correct moment to defend oneself against physical
attack. i.e. the point at which the attackers guard is lowered or
at a moment least dangerous to the student.
To attain the confidence and knowledge to enforce your physical
presence on a potential situation without the use of physical force.
You will learn to use your voice and body language in a way that
will assert your will and deter a physical attack.
To make the student aware of safety tips that may help to avoid
a possible dangerous situation. Also how to handle different types
of attack if it should occur.
These are a few of the kind of tips and measures that may prevent
attack.
Go home with as many friends
as possible.
Try and go home with a friend
in a car or public transport or taxi etc.
Where possible never go home
alone!!
Whether alone or small group
walk in well lit areas.
Walking in public areas where
possible.
Carry a mobile telephone or
communication device.
Never cross unlit or unpopulated
areas even if it adds to your journey.
Self-defence is "self awareness" that
may make that dangerous situation never happen.
